Tenacious D - Kickapoo: MV Analysis

This song (Kickapoo by Tenacious D) which was about family relationship and persistence. Here, I would like to add other perspectives that might suitable with one of the theme, ‘Family Relationship’.
          It is stated clearly from the music video that ‘Young JB’ was a black sheep in his family because he did not do what the father said or did not meet with his family’s requirement that was always stick in God’s way.

In my opinion, it was not quite fair to Young JB because his parents forced him to be someone he did not want to. His parents punished him for being rebel and tore up all Young JB’s posters. This made Young JB ran away from home because his parents not allowed him to be a rock star.

From those examples I see that parents still had control over the child’s dream and limit their children’s creativity, just because they did not meet with parents’ want. On the other hand, parents should give some freedoms to their children to be as creative as they wanted because parents might not know that the children would successful with their choice. Even if the choice became a rock star parents should support their children’s choice.

As related to reality, some parents did not agree if their children involved in a metal or rock band and wanted to become a rock star. Parents still think that a rock star’s life style was bad, like drinking beer, and became a rock star did not guarantee their success. However, the reality also proved that being a rock star brought them to be a success person, for instances in Indonesia we had The S.I.G.I.T, S.ID, and from outside were Lamb Of God, Asking Alexandria, Fall Out Boy, Green Day and etc.   So, it was better for parents to support the children’s choice and gave advice to them, so they would still in a right way.

In addition, the father’s part in the lyrics also support about my explanations before:

That stanza showed Young JB’s father was angry to him because he chose a wrong dream, became a rock star and love all the metal’s stuffs. The father compared him with his brother. His father even said that rock’s or metal’s music was bad and not worth to listen. Young JB’s father also forced him to be the father’s wanted that became a good kid.

          It showed that some parents still had a close minded perspective with metal and/or rock’s music as a bad or devil music.

          From this song, the effects, especially for me that I do not want to be that kind of parents, I will give freedom to my children just like my parents did to me. My parents never complained what I choose and what I like, including loving and having metal stuffs. The result is good for me in seeing this society from many perspectives and always works hard with things that I choose.
