“Nenek Moyangku Seorang Pelaut”. What do the readers think when they read that phrase? What is the relation with Indonesia? How can this phrase be fundamental for Indonesia’s future development?
“Nenek Moyangku Seorang Pelaut”is a famous phrase for Indonesian. This phrase’s (My ancestor is a sailor) is profound. It shows that Indonesia has been a Maritime country since long time ago. It also shows that oceans are a part of our life; a blood of being a Maritime society is in our vein since we're born. It reminds us about one of the most Indonesia’s glorious era, which was when ‘Majapahit’ Kingdom ruled Indonesia (1293 – 1500 M)[1]. The ‘Majapahit’ Kingdom’s brought successful for Indonesia as the most powerful Maritime country and brought prosperity for each territory they ruled in every aspect such as, defense, tourism, culture, economic, and etc. This Kingdom proved not only ruled the Indonesia’s territory, but also another territory outside Indonesia, like Malaya peninsula and Philippine[2]. The ‘Majapahit’ Kingdom also succeeded in making Indonesia as the pioneer of the world trade traffic center in Asia; and how Indonesia is still called ‘Nusantara’ (The Indonesian Archipelago) up until now[3].
Nevertheless, in these days, Indonesia undergoes deterioration in the Maritime sector, because in the new order government era, Indonesia’s development only focused on infrastructural and agricultural development[4]; and it seems that the government abandoned the maritime sector as the powerful resources in Indonesia.
Furthermore, when the global trading market’s era comes, Indonesia is being far left behind by other countries. At last, our government realized, this is happened because of abandoning the most important Indonesia’s resources that is Maritime sector. Citizens could see that there are some Asian countries succeed in their Maritime sector; and one of the nations that are successful in the Maritime sector is South Korea[5]. One evidence showing South Korea as the powerful Maritime country is “the fifth largest shipping nation in the world”[6].
South Korea is not as big as Indonesia and the citizens are not as many as Indonesia has. South Korea does not have many small Islands like Indonesia has. The different situation between South Korea and Indonesia, raising some questions like how could Korea be the best class Maritime power, and Indonesia could not? How could South Korea be succeeding in Maritime power like now? Those questions need to be answered and noticed not only by Indonesian government but also Indonesia’s citizens. Indeed, it is not an easy job to be a Maritime Nation, but it is not impossible for Indonesia to make it real. This needs a lot of efforts and requires a high discipline management in many aspects, for instances defense, infrastructure, human resources, and other aspects.
