Psychonalysis - Slipknot - Song's Analysis

In this journal, I would like to offer some interpretations about "Psychosocial" song's lyric by Slipknot. Those are shown in some stanzas, that are:

Go tell your classes, go dig your graves

Then fill your mouth with all

The money you will save
Sinking in, getting smaller again
Undone, it has begun, I’m not the only one

--> I think this stanza also could be meant that people were angry to the government, because they kept their own wealth which cause corruption. The people said that wealth could not save the government from their anger and the government cannot deny the riot happened.

And the reign will kill us all

We throw ourselves against the wall
But no one else can see
The preservation of the martyr in me

--> I think this stanza was not only about the bad choice that people made in electing their government, but also show how some people in the society still fight the government, and turn their mistake that they ever did into victory.

Fake and defenseless lies (Psychosocial)

I tried to tell you but (Psychosocial)

Your purple hearts are giving out
 (Psychosocial)

--> This stanza told us that the government created a false environment in the society through their fake or 'white lie' speech. Some people in the society might have tried to make the government politizing through riot that they made, but still the government let money and position blind all their senses.

Can’t stop a killing idea (Psychosocial)

I’m not the only one

--> In my opinion, this stanza told us about how the government shut off people’s freedom in many aspects.

I also found, this band used several tones to deliver their song’s meaning, for example:

-  The first, second, fifth, sixth, tenth, and eleventh: are showed people anger, frustration, and depression to the government.

- The third stanzas sang smoothly than the other stanzas. I think the singer wanted to emphasize that the people anger to the government also caused desperation in their miserable live.

- The fourth stanza sang repeatedly and together by the band (Psychosocial 6x) might wanted to show that all people in society experienced a great trauma toward their government. This might also show how the government has locked the people’s freedom in any aspect.

- The ninth and fourteenth stanzas (drum only followed by heavy distortion guitar) emphasized that the people ready to fight back the government to the limits of their live.

Thus, the song’s effect for me, we should think twice or we should carefully elected our government. For example, Indonesian election; the government uses money to make people choose them and many of us are complacent toward that. If we wanted to choose our government, we should not only see from their goodness in this time, but we should take a look back what are their achievements that could be given to this country and these various societies.
