“SUGAR WE’RE GOING DOWN” LYRICS
Written
by Peter Wentz/Patrick Stump/Joe Trohman/Andy Hurley
Am I
more than you bargained for yet?
I've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear
'Cause that's just who I am this week
Lie in the grass, next to the mausoleum
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
(A notch in your bedpost)
(But you're just a line in a song)
I've been dying to tell you anything you want to hear
'Cause that's just who I am this week
Lie in the grass, next to the mausoleum
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
(A notch in your bedpost)
(But you're just a line in a song)
*Drop a heart, break a
name
We're always sleeping in, and sleeping for the wrong team
**We're going down, down in an earlier roundWe're always sleeping in, and sleeping for the wrong team
And Sugar, we're going down swinging
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it (2x)
Is
this more than you bargained for yet?
Oh don't mind me I'm watching you two from the closet
Wishing to be the friction in your jeans
Isn't it messed up how I'm just dying to be him?
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
Oh don't mind me I'm watching you two from the closet
Wishing to be the friction in your jeans
Isn't it messed up how I'm just dying to be him?
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
(Notch in your bedpost)
(But you're just a line in a song)
(But you're just a line in a song)
-Back to * and **-
And Sugar, we're going down swinging
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it
We're going down, down in
an earlier round
(Take aim at myself)
And Sugar, we're going down swinging
(Take back what you said)
I'll be your number one with a bullet
(Take aim at myself)
A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it
(Take aim at myself)
And Sugar, we're going down swinging
(Take back what you said)
I'll be your number one with a bullet
(Take aim at myself)
A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it
We're going down, down
(Down, down)
Down, down
(Down, down)
We're going down, down
(Down, down)
A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it

SONG’S ANALYSIS
In
this section, I will try to analyze Fall Out Boy’s song begins from the title
until the video and how those are interconnected one to another with my own
thoughts helped by some limited sources that I found from the website.
From
the Title
The
song’s title has a contradictory between one to another word. The first word of
the title is “Sugar”, means sweet. Perhaps this song talks about sweet memories
and beautiful things. Sugar also means darling, honey, and/or sweetheart.
However,
the next word is “We’re going down”, that can be seen as their problems or an
unhealthy relationship.
“We”
in this context can be an ordinary couple (a relationship between a boy and a
girl) or a relationship for homosexual couples.
Then,
this song might talk about couple sweet memories, unhealthy relationship, and
perhaps jealously that might end sadly or happily.
From
the Song’s Lyrics
From
the lyrics, I see that there are two interpretations within the lyrics. The
first is from the overt part about an unhealthy relationship between a boy and
girl. The second is the covert part that this song might about an unhealthy
relationship like homosexual. Below, I will explain it more specifically.
1.
The
unhealthy relationship (between the boy and girl)
Am I more than you bargained for yet?
From
this first line, it shows that the boy is asking his girlfriend that does him
not enough for her. Enough here means being someone that may always with her
and always on her side when she needs him.
I've
been dying to tell you anything you want to hear
'Cause that's just who I am this week
'Cause that's just who I am this week
The second and third lines tell us how fed up the boy that he
has tried everything to be the best for his girlfriend and always tried to be
what she wants.
However, in reality we know that change someone in a context
of relationship is cruel. As a teenager we know that being someone else or
being what our couple wants in the blink of an eye is impossible and it is like
tied our freedom.
Lie in the grass, next to the mausoleum
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
The forth line tells us that the boy is desperate, like
dying, and burying his own pains alone. Then, the fifth line tells us that the
boy knows how the girl acts if he is not with her. He knows that he is only one
of those boys that she had slept with because the girl might want him so much
and what he can do is only in her side when she needs him.
However,
the sixth line tells us that the boy is in dilemma, the boy sometimes feels
that he does not bother if the girl with somebody else because he thinks that
the girl is nothing special for him. In the other hand, the next line will tell
us more about the boy’s dilemma.
Drop
a heart, break a name
We're always sleeping in, and sleeping for the wrong team
We're always sleeping in, and sleeping for the wrong team
Those two lines tell us more about the boy’s dilemma that he
does not want to remember what the girl has done in outside because it makes
him more hurts. Other interpretation, the boy knows that they are already in a
relationship but in fact the girl only considers him as a friend or a tool to
fulfill the girl’s need, and not more than that.
From that interpretation, a man or a boy can feel a dilemma
in their relationship and it is also happened in a teenager live, especially if
a teenager relationship is unhealthy like the girl is cheating.
In addition, the interpretations can be related to the
teenager’s live, like what we know as a ‘Friend zone’, means that a boy or a
girl overreacted toward someone’s attention that she/he considers as a ‘love’
attention, but actually it is only an ordinary attention.
Is
this more than you bargained for yet?
Oh don't mind me I'm watching you two from the closet
Wishing to be the friction in your jeans
Oh don't mind me I'm watching you two from the closet
Wishing to be the friction in your jeans
The ninth line tells us that the boy is very tired of their
relationship because he is forced to be somebody else that he does not want
too, since the girl thinks that he does not quite enough for her.
The tenth line tells us that the boy has already known about
the girl’s affair behind him and what he can do only accept it even though it
is very painful for him to know the truth.
In contrast, the eleventh line tells us that the boy wishes
to be someone that the lover can rely on, be the best for her, though they do
not match, and their relationship is unhealthy.
Those
three lines interpretations are also happened in teenagers’ live that sometimes
teenagers feel frustrated, especially if their relationship is not going well,
feel jealous when they cannot be what their lover wants and being compared with
another guy or girl. However, sometimes they still do something silly or stupid
that is forced themselves to be matched with their lover and it is ironic.
Isn't
it messed up how I'm just dying to be him?
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
I'm just a notch in your bedpost
But you're just a line in a song
Those three lines tell us that the
boy is exhausted to be somebody that the girl wants. He feels hurt because he
knows that he is one of those guys that the girls had slept with. However, the
boy is still in dilemma because the girl is nothing special for him but he
still feels hurt by loving her.
We're
going down, down in an earlier round
And Sugar, we're going down swinging
And Sugar, we're going down swinging
From those two lines, it shows that from the beginning the
boy and girl’s relationship are not going well. They know that they have been
together but the ending is not like what the boy wishes. The boy tells us that
they will end up badly and they do not have enough time to fix their
relationship because it has already broken from the beginning. Those two lines
are very matched with a teenager’s live especially in a relationship.
I'll be your number one with a bullet
A loaded God complex, cock it and pull it
Those two lines tell us that the boy
wants to be the only one for her and make their relationship long lasting, but
the girl only thinks and uses him in a painful way.
However, the next line tells us that the boy believes in
God’s power, where the girl will change her mind to love him if he tries his
best. Then, “cock it and pull it” means like a gun, for instance when somebody
wants to shoot at something, she/he has to cock it tightly and then pull it so
she/he can get the target. It is just like the boy who tries to do his best so
someday what he wishes might come true that is being the girl’s true love.
From
that interpretation, it shows how complicated a teenager’s live especially if it
deals with love relationship. A teenager usually still does her/his best to get
the lover’s attention though the lover has hurt her/him in a painful way.
Although it is a silly thing to do, but a teenager still do it.
