From
the Music Video
In
this music video, I will try to interpret from my own thoughts. This story is
not only about a relationship between a man and woman, but also about society,
feminism in a general way, and homosexuality.
1. Relationships
In
general, the relationship just likes other teenagers’ relationship. In this
music video, the man is different from others because he is a half deer, and
has horns. He has tried his best to be like others. However, no one like him
even the kids, so he prefers to be alone.
Then,
he meets the woman who cares to him and their relationship is going well. The
man also tries to blend with others by cut off his horns because he wants to be
like them. However, the woman forbids him to do that and it shows how sincere
the woman love is. These shows in scenes below:
In
addition, the video can be related to the lyrics, “We’re always sleeping in, and sleeping for the wrong team”. It
means that they should not get along together because both of them are just
totally different, and come from different world that the woman is perfect, but
the man is not.
In
the music video, the father does not like if his daughter gets along with the
man because the father is jealous.
In
the end of this story we see that the father is also a half deer. Perhaps, the
father hates if his daughter pays so much attention to the man because when the
father was young no one pays so much attention like the daughter did to the
man. The father might think “I have this deer legs, no one likes me, and no one
cares about me”. The father tried to cover it with shoes, and it works. The
father might also think “You have a more visible sign that you are a half deer
but why you get so much attention and I am not”. From that, the father
jealously turned into hatred, but in the end we can see the happy ending’s
story where the father has accepted the truth of himself.
This
example is also happened in our live that is about humans’ relationship. Take
an example, if you and your friend have the same weaknesses, but your friend
gets more attention than yours, of course you will angry and jealous to your
friend. If this jealously is growing, it will become hatred and that is not
good whether for yourselves or people around you.
2. Society
The main character is a man with a horn (he is a
deer) shows an unusual creature and how the man facing the judgment of the
society, because he is different from others.
A
deer is also a big game, where in our live its position is lower than humans.
In this video context, the half-man-deer is feared by the people because he is
different, and even the kids afraid of him, hates him, and the kids bully the
man.
I also
think that horns’ deer is one of his parts to survive, which is to survive from
people who want to kill him.
This
one shows by the lyric “Am I more than
you bargained for yet? / I’ve been dying to tell you anything you want to hear
/ Cause that’s just who I am this week”.
à From
that lyric, the man talks to the society that why people always look down on
him though he has tried his best, but he knows that he is a half-man-deer.
Even the kids also see the man as unusual creature
and the kids do something bad to him that is throwing a dust-cloth and giving
the ‘F’ finger to him. From this, I assume that kids will not do that unless
the adulthood give that kind of example, here we see a ‘bad’
society-environment example. If this bad-society-environment still happens in
our live, it will be a bad example for our children, and endanger children
future adaption.
Next, the lyrics “Lie in the grass, next to the mausoleum” has depicted clearly but
if we see deeper, I see that the man chooses to be alone with his own world
rather than socializing with the people, this happen because of the society’s
judgment toward him.
ü
Then,
we can see that the father does not like if her daughter gets along with him.
When we look closely what the father does to the man is waving his hand to him.
ü
This
example like when we see an animal and we are waving our hand to that animal,
so the animal will not come near to us.
The
father actions toward the man is called dehumanizing, means that seeing human
not as a human but as an animal.
This scenes show that the man is desperate, and it
is related to the lyrics “Is this more
that you bargained for yet?” and “Isn’t
it messed up how I’m just dying to be him?”
Those
two lyrics show that the man is trying and wanting to be a “real human” or what
the majority wants. The man is also implicitly saying that he will do
everything to be a man and accepted in a society.
In
here, I also see the reason why the man cuts off hiss horns that is to survive
so he can live in a homogenous society, since others only see it as a weakness.
I think it just like superhero’s lives that we’ve seen in a film, where most of
superhero wants to eliminate her/his superpower so that society can accept
her/him, since people sometimes are afraid of her/his super power.
Then, we also see that the woman is trying to make
the man more human by giving him a jacket. From the video, I assume the jacket
looks like a hunter’s jacket because the color is orange, and it is just like
what the father has whom he may a hunter. The woman might think by giving the
man a jacket, people will see him as a human not animal anymore.
