This scene shows that the father wants to kill
the man because he thinks an animal does not deserve a human’s love. Here,
the father still sees the man as an animal that should be killed. Assuming people in the suburb area (shows by the setting) usually hunt a deer for their
living.
3. Feminism
in general
o
From this music video, seeing the
whole story is taken from the men’s perspectives, who are the singer/the band,
the man, the father, and even the boy. In this story we do not know what the
woman think about the man and the father, and what the girl thinks about the
boy’s attitude toward the man. We do not know if the woman has a mother or not
and we do not know whether the woman is truly love the man. I think this is a
kind of “Silencing the women's voice”, means women’s perspective is not needed
though they are involved in the story.
The
depiction of the boy and the girl are generalizing. Why? Let's examine it using feminist lens. The one who throws out the dust-cloth and
gives the ‘F’ finger to the man is the boy not the girl. From this example, we
can assume that girls are always depicted as someone calm, polite, and not
rude. However, the boys are depicted as someone impolite and rude even to the
elder one.
From the music video, the men depicted
as someone that stronger than the woman, has a freedom, and the role is more
complex than the woman has. Knowing that the main character is a half deer and
has a miserable’s live, but he still has a freedom to do whatever he wants,
like walking along the street until midnight perhaps.
In contrast, the woman does not have
enough freedom because she is under the control of her father. The father has a
right to choose what is best for her daughter including in dating someone.
The setting also supports the
patriarchal system (where the men is the leader and more powerful in the
society). For examples, the father is the one who hunts to make a
living for his family, but the daughter doesn't. The daughter is like the other
girl, helping her family to fulfill the needs in term of house working but not
hunting.
4. Homosexuality
In
this music video, we could find a homosexuality issue and try to
interpret as best as it can.
Knowing that the main character is a half-deer-man
showed by the horns, he has. The horns might show that the man is different
from others, whether physically, mentality, and/or perhaps sexuality.
Throughout the story, the man is
hated by the society because he is different from others and does not meet with
society’s standard that is being a normal. Then, there is only one person who
accepts him and wants to be with him, who is the girl. The girl has a father (a
man) and he does not like if his daughter get along with the man.
At the
end of this story, when the father wants to shoot the man, the father was hit
by a car, and the truth reveals that the father has a deer legs. Those are
showed in scenes below:
From that occasion, assuming that
the father and the man are homosexuals. Perhaps, both of them have a love story
in the past that we might not know. From the music video, only two of them who
are different with others, that differences show that they do not meet
the society’s standard, which is being a normal person.
In reality, gay is usually
different with others, showed by their attitude, their physically, their
gestures, and how they communicate. Thus, in this music video, the man and the father
differences showed by their physically that they are different from others. Assuming that the father might jealous to his daughter because she gets
along very well with the man, and the man accepts their relationship. However,
the father cannot get along with the man because he might afraid if the society
knows the truth.
In
addition, the man might still like the father, because at the
very end of this music video, the man winks to the father that I do not really
know what that meaning is.
SYMBOLISM'S INTERPRETATION
Deer’s’ horns and legsà in
this video context, it means a symbol of differences, where the man and the
father is different from others, and do not meet the society’s standard, which
is being a normal person.
In the video, we also see the sign of a deer with a
love and a girl picture on it. I think it means that differences cannot
separate them and differences are beautiful. I think it is also showed from the
lyrics, “A loaded God Complex”, means
that God can make something impossible into possible.
SETTING’S
ANALYSIS
The setting for this
video is very simple; the biggest part is a small town that might be located in
a suburb area. In that small town there is a forest, graveyard, garage, and
houses. I think it is only a complementary of the small town itself.
The
setting takes place in a small town might indicate the people on that area who
are still closed minded toward something unusual or uncommon to cover all or to
support the story’s meaning in the video.
SONG’S
TONES
From the song, the mood
is kind of cheerful and happy. However, if we relate it to the tone’s lyrics is
sarcastic toward what happen with the character, because the song’s story is
not a beautiful story and it does not have happy ending. I think the tone tells
us how angry and hurt the main character is but he/she cannot do anything,
feeling crazy, and just pretend to be happy.
In addition, some parts
of the tone is being emphasized, like “We’re
going down down”, is emphasizing how frustrated and angry the main
character is toward her/his relationship’s condition.
On the other hand, the
tone’s meaning in the video’s story is matched. The story shows a happy song
with a happy ending. Even though, there is emphasizing on the lyrics “We’re going down down”. It means that
the singer wants to emphasize what is actually happen in the story. The word
“We” in this context can be the father and the man who are actually from the
same level that is a half-man-deer.
In
addition, this tone’s meaning can tell how ironic the life of the father and
the man who have to hide their true identity or relationship, because both of
them might homosexuals.
SONG’S
MESSAGES
Ø The
song’s messages from the song’s lyrics and the music video:
1.
We should not judge people from its
cover.
2.
People are different from one to
another; do not stereotype them just because they are different.
3.
Stick with one person, meaning that if
you love someone you should not cheat behind him/her or give a false hope to
him/her, because it will make him/her hurts.
4.
As women we have a right to choose what
is right and wrong for us.
5.
We as women should not be afraid with
our choices, as long as we can give a reasonable statement.
6.
We as humans should be honest to
ourselves and be true to ourselves.
7.
Differences are beautiful and we should
not ashamed of it.
Ø The messages for teenagers:
- As a teenager we can see in a
love relationship, for example avoid a ‘friend zone’ where you give quite much
attention to someone that you should not.
- We should not force our boyfriend
or girlfriend to be somebody else that she or he does not want to.
- I
also think that this song wants to tell us that dilemma in a love relationship
is not only happen in a girl but also happen in a boy.
SONG’S
RELATION WITH THE SOCIETY
From the song, nowadays,
I still find lots of people who feel that they have highest position in society
or superior stepped crush the weaker or imperfect just because they are
perfect, whether physically or mentally.
We can see that if we adults do not
change this behavior, our kids may duplicate what we said or what we did, and
that examples will endanger our kids’ future adaption, especially in the way
they adapt in a new environment, and communicate with others (especially adults
and elder people).TO BE CONTINUED ---
